Baroque Violin Concertos – 25% off complete packageBaroque music is the term given to music that was written from around 1600 – 1750. Instrumental music became increasingly popular and new instrumental genres were developed including the concerto. Performers became more accomplished and composers were able to write more virtuosic music, particularly for the violin family which during this period was developing both in technical adeptness and importance. Possibly the most famous set of violin concertos was Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, although Vivaldi also wrote some 500 concertos for various instruments. While the Baroque violin concerto was closely associated with the Italian school, including the composers Francesco Maria Vetracini and Guiseppe Tartini represented here, the Italian style became popular throughout all of Europe, as those by the German Johann Sebastian Bach and the Englishman Charles Avison show. |
Classical Violin Concertos – 25% off complete packageThe term Classical music applies to music written between approximately 1750 – 1825. This was a time of great growth, both with the Industrial Revolution and the new philosophies of the Enlightenment. Form, balance and symmetry became all important in art and music (based on Greek & Roman Architecture; hence the term Classical). The three towering figures of the Classical style—Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven—all at some stage turned their attentions to the composition of violin concertos (Beethoven’s only Violin Concerto pushing the boundaries of Classicism into the developing Romantic style that followed). This package includes lesser-known but still equally delightful works by their contemporaries including Hummel, Kraus, Benda and Joseph Boulogne, le Chevalier de Saint-Georges, known during his day as ‘The Black Mozart’. |

Romantic Violin Concertos – 25% off complete packageThe Romantic style of music grew in Germany from the movement known as Sturm und Drang (Storm & Struggle) which was to have an enormous impact on music and the arts in general through the nineteenth century. Romanticism was a movement that valued increased artistic self-expression and was accompanied by the growth of the size of the orchestra. Literature provided inspiration for many compositions, and the concept of programme music, or music that followed a story, was born. Composers such as Dvořák and Glazunov embraced Nationalism, often incorporating folk tunes into their compositions. This package of Romantic Violin Concertos collects the very best from across Europe including Brahms, Bruch, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Tchaikovsky. Romanticism continued to influence music well into the twentieth century as the inclusion of the Korngold’s Violin Concerto (composed in 1945) clearly shows. |
Romantic Virtuoso/Composer Concertos – 25% off complete packageThe most famous violin virtuoso and composer of the early Romantic period was undoubtedly Nicolo Paganini, who caused a sensation as he travelled throughout Europe, his phenomenal technique giving rise to the popular rumour that he was in league with the Devil. Among the many thrilling works he composed for violin, Paganini wrote five violin concertos. Louis Spohr (a friend of Beethoven) wrote 15 violin concertos (more than any composer of this time). Charles de Bériot established what is known as the Franco-Belgian school of violin playing. His pupils included Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst and Henri Vieuxtemps (who in turn was Benjamin Godard’s teacher) and are all represented here. |
