The Requiem Mass has been the inspiration for a large number of musical compositions including the requiems of Mozart, Verdi and Fauré. The Requiem Mass was originally a liturgical service within the Roman Catholic Church intended to comfort the soul of the deceased. The accompanying music was performed by monophonic chant within the service. Eventually the dramatic character of the text began to appeal to composers to such an extent that they made the requiem a genre of its own, and the requiems of composers such as Verdi are essentially concert pieces rather than liturgical works.
