Krzysztof Penderecki grew up in Poland and received music training at an early age.  With the first performance of his Anaklasis for 42 string instruments he became a recognized figure in the international avant-garde of modern composers.  Then, beginning in the 1970s, Penderecki turned away from experimental forms, calling them 'more destructive than constructive' and was 'saved from the avant-garde snare of formalism by a return to tradition'.

Best known works include the Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, St. Luke's Passion, Polish Requiem and Utrenja II.  Penderecki's music can be heard in popular movies, often evoking danger or suspense.  Films include The Shining (1980), The Exorcist (1973) and Shutter Island (2010).

Naxos has issued a series of Penderecki recordings often featuring Antoni Wit and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra.  For a limited time, take 20% off these fine recordings.
'I have spent decades searching for and discovering new sounds. At the same time, I have closely studied the forms, styles and harmonies of past eras. I have continued to adhere to both principles … my current creative output is a synthesis.' Krzysztof Penderecki
