Opera - Part II

Compilations Part 2

Enjoy a versatile package of opera favourites with collections of arias, duets and choruses, including many of the best-loved melodies ever written. Composers include Puccini, Rossini, Verdi, Mozart, Wagner, Tchaikovsky and many more.

Classical Part 2

Enjoy such treasures as Beethoven’s compelling Fidelio, Bellini’s beautiful lyrical opera La Sonnambula, Gluck’s highly influential Orfeo ed Euridice and operatic rarities by Benda, Kraus, Mayr, Sacchini, Schweitzer and Winter. Sacchini’s Oedipus was one of Marie Antoinette’s favourite operas.

Romantic

Romantic Part 4 - Verdi

Verdi dominated Italian opera in the second half of the 19th century, as, indeed, he does to this day. La Traviata, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and Aida are only some of the masterworks included in this package. Whether dramatising the moving fates of Violetta, Gilda and Aida or revealing the horrifying psychology of Macbeth and Rigoletto, Verdi creates scenes of immense impact, high pathos and searing beauty. His final masterpiece, though, is Falstaff, a comic opera which fulfilled his own ambitions as a composer.

Romantic Part 5 - Wagner

The epic ‘music dramas‘ by Richard Wagner revolutionised the opera repertoire. The complete Ring Cycle, The Flying Dutchman, Tristan and Isolde and scenes from Lohengrin are included in this highly dramatic and compelling package.

Romantic Part 6 - Puccini

This package includes some all-time opera favourites by Puccini, the master of late 19th and early 20th century Italian opera. His first great success, Manon Lescaut, premiered in 1893, ranked him as a successor to Verdi. His most popular operas, La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly, followed only a couple of years later. Gianni Schicchi, La Rondine and Turandot were also immensely successful. Don’t miss this stunning, emotionally fulfilling package.

20th Century & Contemporary

20th Century & Contemporary Part 2

This package includes some masterpieces of 20th century opera, such as Bartók’s terrifying Bluebeard’s Castle, in which the vast orchestra ranges from chamber-music-like subtlety to massive outbursts that cause spine-tingling moments.

Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress makes use of neo-classical harmonies and his characteristic rhythmic vitality. In The Nightingale, based on a tale set in China by Hans Christian Andersen, Stravinsky uses immensely colourful orchestration to illustrate the exotic scenes.

Taylor’s Peter Ibbetson was one of the most successful American operas of its time. Its Romantic and Impressionist elements underpin its tragic story of betrayal and lost love.

Works by Barber, Braunfels, Enescu, Korngold, Szymanowski and selected scenes from Jewish operas complete this versatile package.

20th Century & Contemporary Part 3

Nixon in China by John Adams, one of America’s most admired composers, ranks among the most successful operas of the last quarter of the 20th century.

Spanish composer Leonardo Balada’s richly melodic opera Cristobal Colon was commissioned by the Spanish government for the 5th centennial of the discovery of America. With José Carreras and Monserrat Caballé in the leading roles, this exceptional recording should not be missed. The sequel, The Death of Columbus, is an intensely moving work, filled with lyrical melodies and imaginative orchestration.

Azio Corghi’s Divara – Wasser und Blut portrays the rise and fall of the Anabaptist regime that took over the city of Münster during the Reformation, using sound symbolism to express the power of fate, the mystery of prophecy and the price of salvation.

Also included are rarities by Catan, Manoury, Mohr, Petitgirard, Weinberger and by American composers Hagen, Hartke, Schiff, Thomas and Wheeler.
