Sir Roger Norrington came from a musical family in Oxford (England). After several years experience as a promising amateur he returned to musical studies at the Royal College of Music in London and began his professional career as a singer and conductor. In 1962 he founded the highly regarded Schutz Choir, and in 1969 he was invited to become music director of Kent Opera. In 1978 he founded the London Classical Players, to research original instrument performance from 1750 to 1900. During the 1980s and 1990s Norrington was much in demand as a guest conductor (as he still is today).
Since 1998 Norrington has been Principal Conductor of the Stuttgart RSO. His historically aware style of playing involves all the demands of early instrument orchestras, but in a “modern” context. A whole series of recordings on SWRmusic / hänssler CLASSIC are giving musicians and the public the chance to hear music as it was heard by the great composers of the past.
