On Sounds of HIV, composer Alexandra Pajak assigns notes from the A minor scale to the pattern created by the genome of the HIV virus.  Variety is added by choosing different instruments, yet the music plays out strictly according to the sequence of the genome.  For such an ugly disease, the sound is oddly beautiful and relaxing.  For this feature, we have placed Sounds of HIV alongside other boundary-breaking compositions by women composers.
