Kenneth Gilbert has entwined scholarship and performance more closely than almost any other figure in the field of early music, making scholarship an art and performance a means of investigation. He has made well over 50 recordings.
Kenneth Gilbert was born in Montreal but has lived for most of his life in Paris. His teachers there included Gaston Litaize, Ruggero Gerlin, and Nadia Boulanger. He has given harpsichord and organ recitals as well as master classes in nearly every European country and in Canada, the United States, Brazil and Japan. In 1986, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 1988, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Among his numerous recordings in solo performance and with other celebrated artists (e.g. Jean-Pierre Rampal, Steven Staryk et al) are the complete harpsichord works of Couperin.
