George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)

April 14 marks the 250th anniversary of the death of George Frideric Handel.

Famous the world over for his oratorio Messiah, orchestral pieces such as the Water Music, Music for the Royal Fireworks and his delightful concertos, Handel remains one of the most popular composers 250 years after his death.

Below are just some of the highlights of Handel’s music on the Naxos label.

HANDEL: Messiah (1751 Version)

Moreover, the performances are wonderfully fresh; the Academy of Ancient Music is a first-rate period-instrument orchestra, and the boys' voices -- schooled in the peerless English choral tradition -- lend a special holiday flavor to the sound. " One could pay far more for a "Messiah" and be much less delighted.
-- Bradley Bambarger, Newark Star-Ledge

HANDEL: Tobit

Just put it on and enjoy some of Handel’s finest music in attractive performances."
-- Robert Hugill, Musicweb International.

HANDEL: Apollo and Dafne / Alchemist

"Roy Goodman accomodates and creates for his two singers a good basis for inspired singing ... The European Union Baroque Orchestra ... once again places its high standing impressively under exhibit."
-- Rémy Franck, Pizzicato

HANDEL: Music for the Royal Fireworks / Water Music

"...an absolutely essential Naxos CD."
-- BBC Radio
8.553457
HANDEL: Concerti Grossi Op. 3, Nos. 1- 6

"These are stylish performances, and Bradley Creswick has achieved a most natural balance between winds and strings...the sound is rich and appealing, and there is a natural and highly effective dynamic range.
-- Terry Barfoot, ClassicsToday.com

8.553430
HANDEL: Oboe Concertos Nos. 1- 3 / Suite in G Minor

Such highly embellished and individual shaped performances make a good case for these early Handel concertos"
-- Gramophone
8.553835
HANDEL: Organ Concertos, Op. 4, Nos. 1-6

"Lindley's rhythms are lively and pointed...The orchestral playing under Bradley Creswick is excellent, alive and keenly rhythmic"
-- Gramophone

8.550700
HANDEL: Recorder Sonatas, Op. 1, Nos. 2, 4, 7 and 11

"Czidra performs them with flair and intelligence"
-- Irish Evening Press
8.557764
HANDEL: Water Music / Music for the Royal Fireworks

Can the market bear another Water Music? Sure, if it’s as exhilarating as this budget-price version by Irish musician Kevin Mallon, a pupil of John Eliot Gardiner, and the Aradia Ensemble.
-- Anthony Holden, The Observer,

8.557003
HANDEL: Coronation Anthems / Silete Venti

"Jeremy Summerly and his forces have assembled one of the more consistently fine performances of these challenging works that I have heard in some time, and have thrown in a much lesser known solo motet as a delightful and unexpected bonus! Rebecca Ryan would have pleased Mr. Handel immensely! Her singing of this rarely heard work is worth the price of the disc.
