Masses are sacred musical compositions; choral works that mirror the structure of the Eucharistic liturgy of several denominations of Christian churches, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Churches of the Anglican Communion, and the Lutheran Church.
To be considered a Mass, the work should contain six sections which together constitute the Ordinary of the Mass; Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnes Dei. Masses are typically sung in Latin, the traditional language of the Roman Catholic church, but later compositions may use different languages and vary the structure. Masses can be a capella or with instrumental accompaniment ranging from small ensembles up to full orchestras. Many Masses, especially later ones, are intended for the concert hall and not to be performed during an actual Mass.
