The featured release below is the second volume in a series devoted to Bartók's works for strings with James Ehnes as featured soloist. In 2011, Ehnes recorded the Violin and Viola Concertos, which was named Disc of the Month in Gramophone Magazine. On this new recording, he turns to the Violin Sonata and Rhapsodies, complemented by the earliest surviving work by Bartók for violin and piano, an Andante. The Sonata in C sharp minor is exhilarating, sometimes turbulent, and, in the Sonata in C major Bartók calls upon the performer to reach beyond the romantic style. Ehnes meets the challenge with a virtuosic performance.
