November 2010 marks the 25th Anniversary of Concerto Köln. Remarkable perhaps, with the ensemble sounding so fresh and dynamic, that they have reached this milestone. It seems much more recently that the Cologne musicians injected “early music” with their youthful verve in the latter half of the 1980s, emphatically blowing off the cobwebs. Right on time for the jubilee, in the wake of their recent successes with Handel's “Water Music” and the discovery of the Rigel Symphonies (Echo Klassik award!), they have now come up with a further large-scale Baroque project: Johann Sebastian Bach's four Orchestral Suites. Released on a double CD set, Concerto Köln's agile dynamism works wonders on the music, highlighting a dance-like character which is often missing. The vitality of the performance surrenders none of it subtlety, however, intelligently reproducing Bach's perfectly balanced structures.
