2011 is the Centennial year of the birth of American composer Alan Hovhaness. His family had roots in Armenia, and he developed a keen interest in music from that region. But his interests expanded to include Indian and Japanese music, even learning the sitar and several Japanese wind instruments. In truth, his music draws from a galaxy of sources, and he synthesized the elements into his own exotic, mystical and nostalgic compositions. Hovhaness was one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century with over 400 numbered works including 67 Symphonies. Below please find a sampling of Hovhaness works from several of our label partners.
