TEMPLE OF CHASTITY - Music from 13th-Century Spain (Codex Las Huelgas)

The sound is complementary and the voices are all exceptionally pleasing, both solo and in the various ensemble combinations (and be assured, there are no choirboys here!) Even though the repertoire is familiar, this impressive group has managed to make it sound fresh and worth hearing over again--no mean accomplishment, and one that makes me eager to hear more from Mille Fleurs and Signum, whatever their next project.

CONTEMPORARY AND MEDIEVAL VOCAL MUSIC

The Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge is impressively at home in this consummately difficult repertoire, making as good a case for both the original medieval works and the modern ones as we could wish for. Even better is how the choir brings these centuries-apart works together into a coherent and sensible program.

TAVENER: Mother and Child / POTT: My Song is Love Unknown

This is a wonderful disc, a program that all choral lovers should hear, not least because it gives proof that very fine sacred choral music is still being written--and given the first-rate attention it deserves by world-class performers.

SONGS OF ANGELS - Music from Magdalen College, Oxford

…this is a disc more for specialist than casual listeners, despite the broad-market appeal of the title "Songs of Angels". But for lovers of early English choral music, it is quite rewarding.
