SUK, J.: Asrael (Helsinki Philharmonic, Ashkenazy)

Disc of the Month

Within seconds of sliding this CD into my hifi system and hitting the play button, I knew it was going to be special. Suk's Asrael symphony is a true one-off and shines in this performance. (...) If Asrael is Suk's masterpiece, then here's a recording to match it.

Andrew Mellor, Classic FM magazine, March 2009

ODE1124-2
LINDBERG, M.: Sculpture / Campana in Aria / Concerto for Orchestra (Tapani, Finnish Radio Symphony, Oramo)

Here Lindberg shows a stunning command of orchestration. (...) The best thing I can say about Magnus Lindberg's music (...) is that it is illuminating. (...) Sound and performance are world-class.

William Zagorski, Fanfare Magazine, March/April 2009
ODE1130-2
SAARIAHO, K.: Notes on Light / Orion / Mirage (Mattila, Karttunen, Paris Orchestra, Eschenbach)

Karita Mattila brings Saariaho's hypnotic score to vibrant life, swooping and gliding effortlessly, imparting a palpable exaltation. (...) Eschenbach and the orchestra support the soloists beautifully. (...) It's music that manifests beauty and feeling in every note.

Robert Schulslaper, Fanfare Magazine, November/December 2008

ODE1126-2
Opera Arias (Soprano): Isokoski, Soile - TCHAIKOVSKY, P.I. / BIZET, G. / GOUNOD, C. / PUCCINI, G. / VERDI, G. (Scene d'amore)

What a treat it is to hear a soprano who is absolutely flawless in her scrupulous attention to the music (...) Conductor Mikko Franck and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra offer sumptuous accompaniments, and what a pleasure to hear a recital in which the soprano does not sound as if she is producing more volume than the orchestra is.

Joel Kasow, Fanfare Magazine, March/April 2009
ODE1123-5
BEETHOVEN, L. van: Piano Concerto No. 3 / Piano Concerto in D major, Op. 61a (Mustonen)

Mustonen's performance of the Third Concerto (...) is one of the finest on disc: big-hearted and free from the Haydnesque prissiness that some interpreters bring to the work. The Tapiola Sinfonietta's playing is sensational, too.

Tim Ashley, The Guardian,
August 8, 2008

ODE1131-5
TCHAIKOVSKY, P.I.: Symphony No. 6, "Pathetique" / Dumka (Eschenbach)

(...) played with thrilling ferocity, grace and poignancy in this live recording by the Philadelphia under Christoph Eschenbach. This must be one of the finest performances on disc.

Anthony Holden, The Observer,
August 3, 2008
ODE1122-5
SIBELIUS, J.: Kullervo (Helsinki Philharmonic, Segerstam)

The best Classical albums of 2008

If I had to choose just one orchestral disc from 2008, it would be Leif Segerstam's resinous 'Kullervo' with the Helsinki Philharmonic.

Anna Picard, The Independent, December 28, 2008

ODE1101-5
PANUFNIK, A.: Sinfonia di sfere / Heroic Overture / Sinfonia sacra (Tampere Philharmonic, Storgards)

Piquant harmonies and idiosyncratic orchestration - a potent combination, equally powerfully in the execution.

Philip Clark, Gramophone,
November 2007
ODE1098-2
KOKKONEN, J.: Cello Concerto / Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4 (Finnish Radio Symphony)

(...) Finland's most significant composer after Sibelius at his most mature and characteristic. (...) this new Ondine (recording) boasts wonderful performances and vivid recorded sound.

Mark Lehman, American Record Guide, July/August 2008

ODE1129-2
KOKKONEN, J.: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 / Opus sonorum (Finnish Radio Symphony, Oramo)

As with its superb predecessor, this disc offers outstanding performance.

David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com, January 2009
ODE1106-2
VASKS, P.: Pater noster / Dona nobis pacem / Mass (Latvian Radio Choir, Klava)

Disc of the Month

A new master recording, celebrating the music of Peteris Vasks, the musical consciousness, if not the Mahler or the Shostakovich of our time.

Christophe Huss, ClassicsTodayFrance.com,
November 2007

ODE1090-5
RAUTAVAARA, E.: Manhattan Trilogy / Symphony No. 3 (Helsinki Philharmonic, Segerstam)

Disc of the Month

The performances, typical of this series, are absolutely first class. (...) Manhattan Trilogy is certainly ravishing, but the Symphony really deserves to enter the repertoire of orchestras the world-over. And if you love Bruckner, even a little, you must hear it.

David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com, February 2008
ODE1100-5
Vocal Recital: Mattila, Karita - DUPARC, H. / SAARIAHO, K. / RACHMANINOV, S. / DVORAK, A. (Helsinki Recital)

Editor's Choice

(...) one of the most interesting, exciting sopranos in the world today. (...) Nothing but praise for the soprano (...) or for her accompanist (Katz is a real listener to what his singer does).

Mike Ashman, Gramophone, August 2007

ODE1089-2
KAIPAINEN, J.: Symphony No. 3 / Bassoon Concerto

If you enjoy big, hairy, colorful, exuberant, generously overscored, quasi-tonal modern symphonies, than you'll love this ebullient example from Jouni Kaipainen. Excellent sonics match the enthusiasm of the performances. Great fun!

David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com,
April 2007
ODE1082-5
RACHMANINOV, S.: Piano Sonata No. 1 / TCHAIKOVSKY, P.: The Seasons (Mustonen)

Mustonen creates a savage case for an unduly neglected sonata. (...) his super-human agility allows him a freedom unknown to lesser pianists. (...) Mustonen is no less remarkable in Tchaikovsky's Seasons, scorning their gentler, more domestic virtues.

Bryce Morrison, Gramophone,
November 2006

ODE1086-5
VASKS, P.: Cello Concerto / Symphony No. 3 (Ylonen)

Splendid in every way (...). If you care at all about contemporary music then you will add this disc to your collection without delay.

David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com, December 2006
ODE1064-5
RAUTAVAARA, E.: Book of Visions / Symphony No. 1 / Adagio celeste (Belgium National Orchestra, Franck)

This is a terrific disc by a master symphonist - expertly performed and recorded. Highly recommended.

Ronald Legum, Audiophile Audition, November 22, 2006

ODE1058-2
CORIGLIANO, J.: Phantasmagoria Suite / To Music / Fantasia on an Ostinato / 3 Hallucinations (Tampere Philharmonic, Klas)

ODE982-2
STRAUSS, R.: 4 Last Songs / Orchestral Songs (Isokoski)

Editor's Choice: Record of the Month

Strauss singing doesn't come much better than this. (...) Here she brings her gifts of sheer beauty of sound combined with a quite unaffected approach to pieces that have suffered enough in their time from over-interpretation.

Alan Blyth, Gramophone, April 2002

ODE856-2
SIBELIUS, J.: Vocal Music (Mattila)

miniature masterpieces (...) sung by such a lustrous, creamy-toned soprano, all repay repeated listening.

John Allison, BBC Music Magazine, December 1995
