Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is the Special Administrative Region’s first and only fully professional orchestra. Founded in 1957, the orchestra turned professional in 1974. From September to July , over 44 weeks, the 89-chamber orchestra gives nearly 200 performances a year for over 120,000 people. When the Hong Kong Cultural Centre opened in 1989, its Concert Hall became the orchestra’s home. In the new Millennium, the orchestra, following the long line of distinguished Music Directors who have helped establish it as “the musical pride of Southeast Asia,” welcomed Hong Kong-born Samuel Wong at its helm. Samuel Wong has acquired a reputation as a superb artist in North America, Europe and Asia, having collaborated with many of the world’s prominent musicians and orchestras including the prestigious New York Philharmonic. The last decade has seen the orchestra soar to new heights, with an expanded repertoire and the forging of a new regional and international identity through frequent appearances abroad. Committed to presenting classical music to the Hong Kong community, the orchestra performs at a number of concert halls around Hong Kong as well as at primary and secondary schools, schools for the mentally disabled and at hospitals. The orchestra has always been active in promoting works composed by local talents.
