The City of Granada Orchestra was founded in 1990 under its principal conductor, Juan de Udaeta. From 1994 to 2004 the principal conductor and artistic director was Josep Pons, who was succeeded by Jean-Jacques Kantorow. The orchestra has divided its time between regular concert seasons in Granada and Andalusia and important engagements within Spain and abroad. Among the last of these have been the Gstaad Festival in Switzerland, La Scala in Milan, the Coimbra International Festival in Portugal and tours to Austria, France, Germany and Great Britain. Conductors, soloists and choral groups with which the orchestra has collaborated include Plácido Domingo, Narciso Yepes, Victoria de los Ángeles, Montserrat Caballé, Carlos Álvarez, Yehudi Menuhin, Christian Zacharias, Krzysztof Penderecki, Christopher Hogwood, David Atherton, Fabio Biondi, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Joaquín Achúcarro, Frans Brüggen, Orfeón Donostiarra, Orfeó Català, Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana, the British Choral Academy, and the King’s Consort.
