Venezuela Symphony Orchestra

The Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela was established in 1930 on the initiative of Vicente Emilio Sojo and since then has collaborated with leading conductors and soloists, including Wilhem Furtwängler, Igor Stravinsky, Eugene Ormandy, Otto Klemperer, Sergiu Celibidache, André Kostelanetz, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Carlos Chávez, Pierre Boulez, Eduardo Mata, Mstislav Rostropovich, Jascha Heifetz, Henryk Szeryng, Arthur Rubinstein, Claudio Arrau, Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma, Pablo Casals and Wilhelm Kempff, among others. Its programmes have included major items of repertoire and a number of world or national premières. Conductors, after Vicente Emilio Sojo, have been Vicente Martucci, Ángel Sauce, Antonio Estévez, Gonzalo Castellanos, Georg Schmoehe and Eduardo Marturet. In January 2011 Theodore Kuchar was appointed Artistic Director for a period of four years. The orchestra undertook its first tour abroad in 1951, and since then has given concerts in Central and South America and in Europe and Russia. Now with a complement of 95 players, the orchestra gives some seventy concerts annually in Venezuela and has made a number of recordings, covering a varied repertoire.
