The Royal Swedish Air Force Band is stationed in Gothenburg, and shares its time between the Air Force and the city of Gothenburg, performing also as the civilian GöteborgsMusiken. The band consists of 27 full-time musicians and its concert hall is the historic Crown House in the centre of Gothenburg, built in 1642-1655. GöteborgsMusiken’s history began in 1905, when some employees at the Gothenburg Tramways Company, Göteborgs Spårvägar AB, started a brass sextet. The band grew during the years, as the Band of the Gothenburg Tramways Company, and gradually was allowed to play employed by the company. In 1992 the name was changed to GöteborgsMusiken and since then it has served as a full-time professional ensemble. In 1997 GöteborgsMusiken was commissioned to perform as the Band of the Royal Air Force. GöteborgsMusiken is financially supported by the state, Gothenburg Council and the Royal Air Force. As The Band of The Royal Swedish Air Force the orchestra performs at several military ceremonies, amongst others at the Changing of the Guard in Stockholm, and also contributes to the preservation of the old traditions of Swedish military music.
