Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN

The Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN (PWO) was put together in 1999 as an independent wind ensemble. In June 2006 PWO made its first appearance as Japan’s first NPO (non-profit organisation) professional wind ensemble. Since 2011 PWO has been performing at Jubel Hall, which is a municipal concert hall located in Toyono. Since its foundation the ensemble has pursued new possibilities in wind music and received good reviews for each of its performances, introducing varied repertoire. It has released more than thirty recordings in the Osakan Live Collection or in an independently planned series Eetoko-dori, which means ‘Selection’ in Japanese. To mark its tenth anniversary in 2009, PWO gave an acclaimed performance at the 14th International World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensemble (WASBE) Conference (Cincinnati, Ohio, USA). PWO has collaborated with renowned conductors, including Heinz Friesen, David R. Gillingham, Glenn D. Price, Dennis L. Johnson, Mark Camphouse, John Boyd and Jan Van der Roost. From 2005 the former symphonic master of the Osaka Municipal Symphonic Band, Yoshihiro Kimura, assumed the post of musical director; in 2011 Orita Nobotta became music adviser; and since 2013 Jan Van der Roost has been principal guest conductor.
