Holst Sinfonietta

The Freiburg based Chamber Ensemble, the Holst-Sinfonietta, takes its name from the English composer Gustav Holst. It was founded in 1996 by its conductor Klaus Simon with players from South Germany. An open-minded approach to repertoire has brought performances of works by Steve Reich, Terry Riley, John Adams, Joseph Schwantner, HK Gruber, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Anno Schreier and others, in stimulating and innovative programmes. There has been a fruitful relationship with the Young Opera Company Freiburg and since 1999 a series of broadcasts and recordings for Naxos, Spektral, cpo and Ars Musici, among other companies, including the first recording of Korngold’s last stage-work, Die Stumme Serenade. In 2008 the Holst-Sinfonietta made its début in Karlsruhe with the first performance of Thomas Hummel’s Aus Trachila. 2011 brought the programme Of Demons and Vampires, with works by Korngold, Hindemith and HK Gruber, with, in 2012, the chamber orchestra version of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, and Claude Vivier’s opera Kopernikus.
