Dear ClassicsOnline customer,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key September titles from Naxos to kick off the peak release season.

VILLA-LOBOS, H.: Symphonies Nos. 6 and 7 (Sao Paulo Symphony, Karabtchevsky)
8.573043  Villa-Lobos: Symphonies Nos. 6 and 7

This is the first volume of a new cycle devoted to the complete symphonies of Brazil's great 20th century composer.

The symphonies are performed by Brazil's world-class São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under veteran Brazilian conductor, Isaac Karabtchevsky. Blockbuster performances in blockbuster sound.

MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 1 (Baltimore Symphony, Alsop)
8.572207  Mahler: Symphony No. 1

This is a wonderful performance by our star conductor Marin Alsop and her Baltimore Symphony – their recordings of Dvorák symphonies and, more recently, the Bartók Concerto for Orchestra have received huge critical acclaim. Outstanding sound from our GRAMMY®-winning house producer Tim Handley. Another blockbuster!

BERLIOZ, H.: Symphonie fantastique / Le corsaire (Lyon National Orchestra, Slatkin)
8.572886  Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique

Here is the first volume of a project to record the complete works of Berlioz with the Lyon National Orchestra and its new Musical Director Leonard Slatkin.

This is one of the finest performances of the symphony I've ever heard. Audiophile-quality sound produced by our Tim Handley. The recording is also available on Blu-ray Audio. We offer collectors a unique bonus – the disc includes an alternative version of the second-movement Un bal with a cornet solo.

DEBUSSY, C.: Orchestral Works, Vol. 8 (Markl) - Preludes, Books 1 and 2 (arr. P. Breiner for orchestra)
8.572584  Debussy: 24 Préludes

Originally, this was meant to be included in the complete orchestral works. However, Lyon recorded the orchestration by Colin Matthews by mistake. We therefore decided to include that version in the complete set and release our Peter Breiner version separately. We had commissioned the orchestration from Peter.

It will be interesting to compare the two versions and the performances, the first by the Lyon National Orchestra and the second by the Royal Scottish National, both conducted by Jun Märkl. Excellent sound, as usual!

Also Available:
Debussy: Complete Orchestral Works (9-CD Box Set)  8.509002

PENDERECKI, K.: Canticum canticorum Salomonis / Kosmogonia (Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, Wit)
8.572481  Penderecki: Canticum Canticorum Salomonis • Kosmogonia

Another volume in our ongoing project to record all the orchestral and choral-orchestral works of the great Polish composer. All volumes in the series have received the highest critical praise and here again are outstanding performances by our Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra under Antoni Wit.

Also Available:
Penderecki: Symphony No. 3  8.554491
Penderecki: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 5  8.554567
Penderecki: Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4  8.554492
Penderecki: Symphony No. 7  8.557766
Penderecki: Symphony No. 8  8.570450
Penderecki: Te Deum  8.557980
Penderecki: A Polish Requiem  8.557386-87

CASELLA, A.: Concerto for Orchestra / Pagine di guerra / Suite (Rome Symphony, La Vecchia)
8.573004  Casella: Concerto for Orchestra • Pagine di Guerra • Suite

This is the fifth volume of our project to record the complete orchestral works of this important Italian 20th century composer. The Concerto is perhaps Casella's greatest orchestral work. The two other pieces on the disc are world-premiere recordings. The first class, idiomatic performances again feature the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma under Francesco La Vecchia. Our series devoted to Italian composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries is unprecedented.

Also Available:
Casella: Symphony No. 1  8.572413
Casella: Symphony No. 2  8.572414
Casella: Symphony No. 3  8.572415
Casella: Notte di maggio / Cello Concerto / Scarlattiana  8.572416
