Dear ClassicsOnline customer,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key October releases from Naxos. Here are his recommendations:

SHOSTAKOVICH, D.: Symphonies, Vol. 9 - Symphony No. 4 (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Petrenko)
8.573188  Shostakovich: Symphony No. 4

This Shostakovich Symphony cycle continues to receive resounding praise from all quarters, with unfailingly positive reviews for Vasily Petrenko's insightful readings of the works and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic's response in performance. Their recording of the Seventh Symphony Leningrad topped the UK Specialist Classical Chart for five weeks; this latest instalment, comprising the gargantuan Fourth Symphony, will no doubt create a similar impact to take its place in what is sure to become one of the major recording triumphs of the century.

PROKOFIEV, S.: Symphony No. 4 (revised 1947 version) / The Prodigal Son (Sao Paulo Symphony, Alsop)
8.573186  Prokofiev: Symphony No. 4 / The Prodigal Son

Marin Alsop adds to the success of her first issue in this ongoing cycle of Prokofiev's symphonies, in which her synergy with the Säo Paulo Symphony Orchestra in Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony (8.573029) produced "an outstanding achievement." (BBC Music Magazine). The Fourth Symphony is given in its enriched revision of 1947, released here both in CD and Blu-ray Audio formats. The latter perfectly captures the spectacular performance under Alsop, who was suitably honoured this year by becoming the first female conductor to direct the BBC's Last Night of the Proms.

SARASATE, P. de: Violin and Orchestra Music, Vol. 4 (Tianwa Yang, Navarre Symphony, Martinez-Izquierdo)
8.572276  Sarasate: Music for Violin and Orchestra, Vol. 4

Coming in the wake of her much lauded release of Mendelssohn's Violin Concertos (8.572662), Tianwa Yang continues to dazzle with her consummate response to the technical challenges of Sarasate's music for violin and orchestra in this final volume of her acclaimed series; the concluding volume in the series of works for violin and piano will be released in January, 2014. The performance of this stunning programme, which showcases Yang's dexterity, lightness of touch and heart-melting tone, will no doubt see her garnering praise equal to that for her previous Sarasate disc: "...plays marvellously, fearlessly and with great freshness and verve." (ClassicsToday.com)

Cello Duet Arrangements (A Tale of Two Cellos) (Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber, Lenehan)
8.573251  A Tale of Two Cellos

British cellist Julian Lloyd Webber continues to build on his impressive record of giving the premières of new works, represented on this disc by a collection of exquisite arrangements for two cellos. The eclectic repertoire – from Monteverdi to Arvo Pärt – makes this a highly attractive disc for collectors of chamber music looking for something slightly off the beaten track, performed by musicians who all enjoy international solo reputations.

SHOSTAKOVICH, D.: Violin Concerto No. 1 / RIHM, W.: Gesungene Zeit (Zweden, Waart, Peskó)
8.573271  Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1

Jaap van Zweden combines Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto, one of the 20th century's great concertos, with a work from one of today's most noted composers, Wolfgang Rihm. Since making this recording, van Zweden has gone on to achieve international fame as a conductor. He was Musical America's choice for Conductor of the Year 2012, for example. His performance here clearly demonstrates the quality of musicianship that enabled him to exchange his bow for the baton.

HINDEMITH, P.: Piano Concertos (Complete) (Biret, Yale Symphony, Toshiyuki Shimada)
8.573201-02  Hindemith: The Complete Piano Concertos

This release is the only one currently available that presents Hindemith's complete works for piano and orchestra grouped together. Idil Biret, one of the most prominent Naxos artists, brings her formidable technical skills and impeccable musicianship to these works. Wilhelm Kempff described her as "my favourite disciple...this genius pianist". These new recordings are the perfect introduction to the piano works of one of the most important composers of the 20th century.

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
