Klaus Heymann Recommends - ClassicsOnline

Dear ClassicsOnline Fans,

Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann offers his insights on a selection of November Naxos releases.

JANACEK, L.: Glagolitic Mass / Sinfonietta (Libor, Marciniec, Bentch, Gierlach, Malanowicz, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, Wit)
8.572639  Janácek: Glagolitic Mass and Sinfonietta

This is a dream come true for me – Janacek's non-operatic masterworks on one album. The Mass is one of the most exciting pieces of sacred music ever written, with tremendous rhythmic energy and great melodies. The Sinfonietta, written for huge orchestral forces with a prominent brass section, is equally exciting and the performances and sound do full justice to both works.

DEBUSSY, C.: Orchestral Works, Vol. 7 (Markl) - Fantaisie / 2 Danses / Rhapsodies
8.572675  Debussy: Orchestral Works, Vol. 7

This volume brings one of my pet projects to a successful conclusion, i.e. recording the complete orchestral music of Debussy including all orchestrations by his contemporaries or other well-known composers. Volume 7 offers all of the composer's works for solo instrument and orchestra on one disc, featuring French masters of their instruments.

MAHLER, G.: Lied von der Erde (Das) (J. Henschel, Kunde, Houston Symphony, Graf)
8.572498   Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth)

This is an exciting new recording from one of America's finest orchestras, the Houston Symphony and its Music Director, Hans Graf. There are very few first-class recent recordings and even fewer featuring a mezzo, American Jane Henschel. The tenor is Gregory Kunde. First-class sound from award-winning producer Michael Fine.

LANCINO, T.: Requiem (Grant-Murphy, Gubisch, Skelton, Courjal, Radio France Choir, Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, Inbal)
8.572771  Lancino: Requiem

This is a major new work and a stunning recording featuring the Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus of Radio France conducted by Eliahu Inbal as well as a stellar cast of singers. The composer's Requiem is a challenging and eloquent contemplation on human mortality. There are few if any contemporary works that are as moving as this one. The sound is spectacular.

STENHAMMAR, W.: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 (Sivelov, Malmo Symphony, Venzago)
8.572259  Stenhammar: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2

There have been quite a few recordings of these works in recent years but our superb new recording involves our Swedish house orchestra, the Malmö Symphony and Swedish pianist Niklas Sivelöv who previously recorded the composer's piano works for Naxos. While the first concerto is Brahmsian in nature, the remarkable second concerto is a romantic masterpiece written by the composer at the peak of his creative powers.

SHOSTAKOVICH, D.: New Babylon (The) (Basel Sinfonietta, Fitz-Gerald)
8.572824-25   Shostakovich: New Babylon

This is the world-premiere recording one of the composer's most inventive and truly symphonic film scores, the first complete recording of all the surviving music from the original manuscript full score.

Our previous world-premiere recordings of Shostakovich film scores, Odna (Alone) and The Girlfriends met with great critical acclaim. Mark Fitz-Gerald, described as 'one of the indispensable Shostakovich interpreters of our time', conducts the Basel Sinfonietta. Not to be missed by admirers of the composer and his film music.

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
