Klaus Heymann Recommends - ClassicsOnline

Dear ClassicsOnline Fans,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key releases from the Naxos May 2012 roster.

BARTOK, B.: Concerto for Orchestra / Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta (Baltimore Symphony, Alsop)
8.572486  Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra / Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta

These works are among the most frequently heard compositions of Bartók. They are orchestral showpieces and are performed here by Marin Alsop and her Baltimore Symphony, in top form. First-rate performances and terrific sound!

Companion Titles:
The Miraculous Mandarin (Complete Ballet)  8.557433
Bluebeard's Castle (Opera in One Act)  8.660928

SHOSTAKOVICH, D.: Symphonies, Vol. 7 - Symphonies Nos. 2 and 15 (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, Petrenko)
8.572708  Shostakovich: Symphonies Vol. 7 – Symphonies Nos. 2 and 15

Here is another installment of our acclaimed new Shostakovich symphony cycle. It couples the early Second Symphony with the composer's last.

Another winner from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and its Musical Director, Vasily Petrenko.

CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO, M.: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 / 4 Dances for Love's Labour's Lost (Marangoni, Malmo Symphony, Mogrelia)
8.572823  Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 / Four Dances from 'Love's Labour's Lost'

Castelnuovo-Tedesco is one of my favorite Italian composers of the 20th century. We previously released the composer's complete Shakespeare overtures. The two piano concertos are very approachable and superbly orchestrated examples of the composer's output.

This is the only available recording coupling the two concertos together. The Four Dances from 'Love's Labour's Lost' here receive their world-premiére recording.

Alessandro Marangoni is the soloist. His recordings of the piano works of Rossini for Naxos have received wide critical acclaim.

Not to be missed!

Companion Titles:
Shakespeare Overtures, Vol. 1  8.572500
Shakespeare Overtures, Vol. 2  8.572501

BEETHOVEN, L. van: Glorreiche Augenblick (Der) / Choral Fantasy (McCawley, City of London Choir, Royal Philharmonic, Wetton)
8.572783  Beethoven: Der glorreiche Augenblick / Choral Fantasy

This is a recording to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Naxos. Der glorreiche Augenblick means 'The Glorious Moment', a very appropriate title for the occasion. The rarely performed cantata features six outstanding soloists. It is coupled here with the Choral Fantasia with acclaimed pianist Leon McCawley as soloist.

A great opportunity to get acquainted with two rarely performed festive choral works by Beethoven.

Violin Music - OLSEN, C.G.S. / ATTERBERG, K. / STENHAMMAR, W. / BULL, O.B. / HALVORSEN, J. / SIBELIUS, J. (Nordic Violin Favourites) (Kraggerud)
8.572827  Nordic Violin Favourites

The soloist Henning Kraggerud came up with this program combining Romantic miniatures by Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish composers. He plays these pieces beautifully, as is to be expected from an artist who received the Norwegian Grieg and Ole Bull prizes and the Sibelius Prize. I cannot imagine a better program for a romantic evening at home.

Companion Titles:
Norwegian Violin Favourites  8.554497
Sibelius / Sinding: Violin Concertos  8.557266
Sinding: Violin and Piano Music, Vol. 1  8.572254
Sinding: Violin and Piano Music, Vol. 2  8.572255

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
