Dear ClassicsOnline customer,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key May releases from Naxos. Here are his recommendations:

YSAŸE, E.: 6 Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27 (Tianwa Yang)
8.572995  Ysaÿe, E.: Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27

This disc of Ysaÿe's Six Sonatas for Solo Violin merits a space in everyone's collection. Written by a towering figure in the history of the violin, and dedicated to some of the most eminent performers on the instrument, such as Kreisler, Szigeti and Enescu, they are now brought to life by one of the most inspirational new talents around – Tianwa Yang. The sonatas remain some of the most technically challenging works of the 20th century. Few artists are capable of performing the works in their entirety and with the aplomb that Yang has at her fingertips.

WEINBERG, M.: Symphony No. 18 / Trumpet Concerto No. 1 (Balio, St. Petersburg Chamber Choir, St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, V. Lande)
8.573190  Weinberg, M.: War – there is no word more cruel
Balio, St Petersburg Chamber Choir, St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, Lande

The works on this disc brim with an edgy power that is gripping throughout. Weinberg's Symphony No. 18 is the centrepiece of his symphonic trilogy On the Threshold of War and is one of the most significant creations of his later years. Using texts by Soviet poets, the work focuses on the traumas of the Soviet Union in World War II with great eloquence and power. Considered by some to be the concerto that Shostakovich never wrote, Weinberg's Trumpet Concerto deals in emotional effects that range from grotesque to sardonic. Although rarely heard, it remains one of the finest and most intriguing examples of the genre.

MEYERBEER, G.: Overtures and Entr'actes from the French Operas (New Zealand Symphony, Darrell Ang)
8.573195  Meyerbeer, G.: Overtures and Entr'actes from the French Operas
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Ang

Anyone unfamiliar with early 19th-century French grand opera will welcome this disc as a unique opportunity to become acquainted with the legacy of Giacomo Meyerbeer, the creator of some of the period's most impressive and influential operas. As a companion disc to our recent release of ballet music from the operas (8.573076), this recording of only the overtures and entr'actes offers another unrivalled shortcut to the sizzle of Meyerbeer's spectacular output and is certain to encourage newcomers to delve further into this rich chapter of music history.

SPOHR, L.: String Quartets (Complete), Vol. 16 - Nos. 23 and 26 (Moscow Philharmonic Concertino String Quartet)
8.225983  Spohr, L.: String Quartets Vol. 16
Moscow Philharmonic Concertino String Quartet

This is the penultimate volume in our series of Louis Spohr's complete string quartets. Although he was prolific in writing both chamber music, concertos and symphonies, it is Spohr's string quartets that best reflect his standing as one of the leading virtuoso violinists of the first half of the nineteenth century. Intended for Spohr himself to play, the first violin parts often bristle with technical demands. Such panache, evident in the Quartet No. 26, is complemented on this disc by the lyricism of the Quartet No. 23.

GRIEG, E.: Orchestral Works (Complete) (Engeset) (8-CD Boxed Set)
8.508015  Grieg, E.: Complete Orchestral Works
Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Engeset

This 8-CD boxed set represents not only a compendium of Grieg's orchestral works, but also an opportunity to become acquainted with Norway's entire national heritage through music. Grieg's intention was "to paint Norwegian nature, Norwegian folk-life, Norwegian history and Norwegian folk-poetry" in his compositions, all of which has here been faithfully realised to critical acclaim by Bjarte Engeset. CD 8 was among the New York Times Critics' Favorite Classical Recordings, 2013: "This wonderful album presents...rousing choruses, invocations to Norse gods, a prophetess weaving ominous spells, and more."

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
