Klaus Heymann Recommends - ClassicsOnline

Dear ClassicsOnline Fans,

Once again our founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts and opinions on new recordings from Naxos.  Klaus Heymann created Naxos Records as a way to pursue his passion for music and share it with others around the world. Despite the demands of running a large company, he still guides repertoire choices and oversees many details of the label personally.

Please enjoy these recommended recent Naxos releases from the desk of Klaus Heymann.

SUK, J.: Fairy Tale / Fantasy in G minor / Fantasticke scherzo (M. Ludwig, Buffalo Philharmonic, Falletta) 8.572323  Suk: Fantasie in G minor/Fairy Tale/Fantasticke Scherzo

The Fantasie is a mini violin concerto and the two orchestral pieces are among the composer’s most popular works. Wonderful late Romantic music with reminiscences of Dvorak.  The Buffalo Symphony Orchestra under JoAnn Falletta gives first-class performances not bettered by any other recording. The concertmaster of the orchestra, Michael Ludwig is the excellent soloist in the Fantasie. Terrific sound!

HALFFTER, E.: Carmen [film score] (Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Fitz-Gerald) 8.572260  Ernesto Halffter: Carmen [Music for the 1926 silent film]

A student of Falla, Halffter is one of the most important Spanish composers of the 20th century and this film score is one of his greatest achievements. This is colorful, impressionistic music, exciting to listen to from beginning to end. This is another great film music recording featuring the Frankfurt Radio Symphony under Mark Fitz-Gerald, the same forces that brought you our successful recording of Shostakovich’s Odna. This is not just for film music fans, but for anyone who loves orchestral music with a Spanish flavor. Excellent sound!

FUCHS, R.: Serenades Nos. 1 and 2 / Andante grazioso and Capriccio (Cologne Chamber Orchestra, C. Ludwig) 8.572222  Robert Fuchs: Serenades

Fuchs composed 5 string serenades that can all stand comparison with the best works of the genre such as the popular serenades of Tchaikovsky and Dvorak. The remaining serenades have already been recorded and will be released later this year.

Excellent performances by one of our best-selling house orchestras, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra under its new conductor, Christian Ludwig.

Viola Recital: Stumm, Jennifer - ROLLA, A.: Viola Sonatas / Duetto / Esercizi (Capricci) 8.572010  Rolla: Viola Sonatas and other Viola chamber music

This is a very attractive collection of pieces composed by Paganini's teacher; great melodies combined with technically demanding writing.  The performances by violist Jennifer Stumm are outstanding -- she is a first prize winner of the American Concert Artists Guild Competition, the first violist to win First Prize in the competition’s 60-year history. One of the few violists to have a solo career.

SHOSTAKOVICH, D.: Symphonies, Vol. 5 - Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3 (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, Petrenko) 8.572396  Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3

Our new Shostakovich symphony cycle has met with unprecedented critical acclaim.

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
