Dear ClassicsOnline customer,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key releases from the Naxos July 2012 roster.

MERCADANTE, S.: Don Chisciotte alle nozze di Gamaccio (Guagliardo, Colaianni, Catrani, Mirabelli, Ever, Mastrototaro, Fogliani)
8.660312-13  Mercadante: Don Chisciotte alle nozze di Gamaccio

This is another product of our co-operation with the Rossini Festival in Wildbad. Mercadante was a contemporary of Rossini and Donizetti and one of the most productive 19th century operatic composers. Don Chisciotte was written during the composer's stay in Spain and combines the fashionable Neapolitan style of the day with Spanish folk music elements. The opera is highly entertaining and dramatic and this is the world première recording of the work. Conductor Antonino Fogliani received great critical acclaim for his conducting of Vaccaj's La sposa di Messina, another rarity from Wildbad and he also conducted a number of Rossini operas for Naxos, part of Naxos's ongoing project to record and release all of the composer's operas. Lots of great melodies and enjoyable singing.

MAXWELL DAVIES, P.: Symphony No. 3 / Cross Lane Fair (BBC Philharmonic, Maxwell Davies)
8.572350  Maxwell Davies: Symphony No. 3 / Cross Lane Fair

This is the third volume of our cycle of the composer's complete symphonies with the composer himself conducting the BBC Philharmonic. In the Symphony, the composer invokes the work of nature and the violent sea in an exciting contemporary, yet accessible musical language. The remaining six symphonies will be released in due course. Don't miss the opportunity to collect the symphonies of one of the greatest living composers. The other piece is a lighter work, inspired by the memories of a fairground Maxwell Davies visited as a child.

Also Available:
Maxwell Davies: Symphony No. 1  8.572348
Maxwell Davies: Symphony No. 2  8.572349

DUSSEK, F.X.: Sinfonias, Altner G4, A3, Bb2, Bb3 (Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, Hakkinen)
8.572683  Dussek: Four Symphonies

Dussek, a pianist, celebrated teacher and leading composer of instrumental music in Prague, was a friend of Mozart. His music reflects the strong influence of composers such as Haydn and Dittersdorf. There are recordings of his keyboard concertos but there are no recordings of his symphonies other than a previous Naxos disc with three symphonies. The music is melodious, Viennese and highly enjoyable. The sparkling performances by the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra are directed by prize-winning harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen. Not to be missed!

Also Available:
Dussek: Three Sinfonias  8.555878

BUSONI, F.: Clarinet Concertino / Divertimento / Rondo arlecchinesco / Tanzwalzer (Rome Symphony, La Vecchia)
8.572922  Busoni: Clarinet Concertino / Divertimento / Rondo arlecchinesco / Tanzwalzer

All six works on this CD are examples of the composer's classicist style – the music has clarity and is far removed from the heavy late-romantic style of Busoni's contemporaries. There are not many recordings of these works and ours is the only one coupling the two works for woodwind and orchestra. This is another volume of our project to record all the most important Italian composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Previous releases in the series have met with great critical acclaim.

Also Available:
Busoni: Piano Concerto  8.572523

KODALY, Z.: Hary Janos Suite / Dances of Galanta / DOHNANYI, E.: Konzertstuck (Starker, Seattle Symphony, Schwarz)
8.572749  Kodaly: Hary Janos Suite / Dances of Galanta • Dohnanyi: Konzertstuck

We have been releasing quite a few recordings by the Seattle Symphony conducted by Gerard Schwarz, previously available on Delos. This recording is special because it features the great János Starker in the Dohnányi Konzertstück, a full-scale cello concerto of considerable lyric beauty. Music lovers will be familiar with the Kodály works, given first rate performances by one of America's finest orchestras under its musical director. A must for all cello lovers.

ISASI, A.: String Quartets, Vol. 1 (Isasi Quartet) - Nos. 0 and 2
8.572463  Isasi: String Quartets, Vol. 1

Two highly enjoyable quartets by Basque composer Isasi, a student of Humperdinck in Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century. No. 0 shows the influence of Grieg and Dvorák while No. 2 is written in a late-Romantic style. This is the first of three volumes of the composer's complete string quartets – the remaining four quartets will be released over the next 12 months. The string quartets blend the depth of German musical culture with the lyricism and sensuality of Southern Europe. A must for collectors of string quartet literature.

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
