Dear ClassicsOnline customer,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key July releases from Naxos. Here are his recommendations:

Rossini, G.: Semiramide [Opera] (Penda, Pizzolato, Regazzo, Osborn, Mastroni, Fogliani)
8.660340-42  Rossini, G.: Semiramide [Opera] (Penda, Pizzolato, Regazzo, Osborn, Mastroni, Fogliani)

Semiramide, Rossini's longest and most spectacular opera, was the final Italian stage work he wrote before turning to the Parisian opera scene. Often heard in abridged versions, this disc is significant in that it presents the work entirely uncut. Leading singers include three times GRAMMY® nominated soprano Alex Penda and American tenor John Osborn, the first non-Italian to receive the prestigious Premio Aureliano Pertile award in 2012.

Maxwell Davies, P.: Strathclyde Concertos Nos. 3 and 4 (R. Cook, Franks, Morrison, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Maxwell Davies)
8.572353  Maxwell Davies, P.: Strathclyde Concertos Nos. 3 and 4 (R. Cook, Franks, Morrison, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Maxwell Davies)

Conducted by the composer and featuring the soloists and orchestra for whom they were written, this disc of two of Maxwell Davies' ten Strathclyde Concertos carries a stamp of authority. Combining contemporary expression with classical models, the works are both approachable and exciting, featuring rich percussive effects, intense lyricism and agile virtuosity.

DOWN BY THE SEA: A Collection of British Folk Songs - (MacMillan, J. / Duggan, J. / Grainger, P. / Campbell, H. / Turnbull, S.M. / Burke, P. / Andrew, K.)
8.573069  DOWN BY THE SEA: A Collection of British Folk Songs - (MacMillan, J. / Duggan, J. / Grainger, P. / Campbell, H. / Turnbull, S.M. / Burke, P. / Andrew, K.)

With seven première recordings and stylish performances from Blossom Street, whose Sleep, Holy Babe (8.572868) was named Classic FM's Best Christmas Disc of the Year, this follow-up compendium is sure to be a hit. Works by early curators of the British folksong heritage, such as Vaughan Williams, Grainger and Warlock, combine with the contemporary sounds of the immensely popular James MacMillan and Judith Bingham to extend the stylistic span to more than a century.

Leclair, J.-M.: Violin Sonatas, Op. 2, Nos. 1-5, 8 (Butterfield, Manson, Cummings)
8.572866  Leclair, J.-M.: Violin Sonatas, Op. 2, Nos. 1-5, 8 (Butterfield, Manson, Cummings)

Adrian Butterfield's position as market leader in this repertoire was confirmed by the critical reaction to his 3-volume set of Leclair's Book One of violin sonatas. This first disc in the première recordings of the complete set of Book Two can expect to be given a similar red carpet treatment by collectors and critics alike.

Taneyev, S.I.: Complete String Quartets, Vol. 3 (Carpe Diem String Quartet) - Nos. 5, 7
8.573010  Taneyev, S.I.: Complete String Quartets, Vol. 3 (Carpe Diem String Quartet) - Nos. 5, 7

This is Volume 3 in the complete cycle of Taneyev's string quartets that has no competing issues. Taneyev's quartets are among the finest of all his chamber works, represented here by his early Quartet in E flat major and the later Quartet No. 5 that was inspired by Haydn and Beethoven. Carpe Diem's previous issue in the series was enthusiastically received: "exceptional... electrifying... flawless technique and appropriate feeling". (American Record Guide)

Schumann, R.: Lied Edition, Vol. 7 - Liederkreis / 3 Gedichte, Op. 30 / 6 Gedichte, Op. 36
8.557080  Schumann, R.: Lied Edition, Vol. 7 - Liederkreis / 3 Gedichte, Op. 30 / 6 Gedichte, Op. 36

This seventh volume of our complete Schumann Lieder Edition contains a further collection of songs from 1840, Schumann's remarkably prolific "Year of Song". Extremes of emotion and preoccupation with nature, love and mediaeval mystery find expression in his Liederkreis Op. 39, the Drei Gedichte Op. 30 and the uniquely dramatic Die Löwenbraut, brought to life by Thomas E. Bauer's fine baritone voice: "...natural for Lieder... sensitive to the poetry". (Opera News)

Turina, J.: Piano Music, Vol. 9 (Maso) – Rincones sevillanos / Por las calles de Sevilla / Contemplacion
8.572915  Turina, J.: Piano Music, Vol. 9 (Maso) – Rincones sevillanos / Por las calles de Sevilla / Contemplacion

Having recorded more of Turina's piano works than any other performer, Jordi Masó's ninth instalment in our survey of the Spanish master's complete piano music will no doubt add to the critical acclaim the series has been garnering from the start: "Turina's alluring, sun bathed piano writing meets its match in this devoted exponent." (MusicWeb International). The disc marries a beautiful early work, Coins de Séville, with three late ones that similarly evoke the city's charm with a mixture of virtuosity and expressionism.

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
