Dear ClassicsOnline customer,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key January releases from Naxos. Here are his recommendations:

SARASATE, P. de: Violin and Piano Music, Vol. 4 - Transcriptions (Tianwa Yang, Hadulla)
8.572709  Sarasate: Violin and Piano Music, Vol. 4 - Transcriptions

This final volume in the series offers mainly transcriptions and arrangements as well as Souvenirs de Faust, a paraphrase on themes from Gounod's opera.

This has been one of my pet projects and it has established Tianwa Yang as one of the foremost violinists of her generation and one of the best-selling Naxos artists. The final volume of the Music for Violin and Orchestra was released in November and we now have the first-ever really complete collection of the famous violinist's works on Naxos.

MONIUSZKO, S.: Overtures (Warsaw Philharmonic, Wit)
8.572716  Moniuszko: Overtures

Moniuszko was Poland's leading opera composer in the 19th century. His operas are full of great melodies, some of which are highlighted in the overtures. Our recording features Poland's national symphony orchestra conducted by Antoni Wit, one of our bestselling conductors. We have another volume of orchestral music by Moniuszko in the pipeline.

WEINBERG, M.: Symphony No. 12 / The Golden Key Suite No. 4 (St. Petersburg State Symphony, Lande)
8.573085  Weinberg: Symphony No. 12 / The Golden Key Suite No. 4

Written in the style and spirit of Shostakovich, the work was composed in response to the death in August 1975 of his great friend and supporter. It is the longest and most wide-ranging of Weinberg's purely orchestral symphonies. Our recording was prepared utilising the composer's handwritten materials and markings. The Golden Key is one of two ballets of the composer. The remaining three suites will be recorded and released later in the series. Our Weinberg project has received great critical acclaim — BBC Music Magazine praised the performance of Symphony No. 8 as one of "searing intensity". This recording was also awarded a Diapason d'Or. Vladimir Lande, the conductor of this recording of No. 12 was praised by Gramophone as having "an understanding and fervour that is greatly superior to any of the recorded alternatives". Symphony No. 18 has already been recorded and will be released later this year.

FIBICH, Z.: Orchestral Works, Vol. 2 - Symphony No. 2 / At Twilight / Idyll (Venys, Czech National Symphony, Stilec)
8.573157  Fibich: Symphony No. 2 / At Twilight / Idyll

This is the second volume of our project to record the complete orchestral works of Fibich. There are other recordings of Symphony No. 2, including our own recording by Andrew Mogrelia but the couplings here are unique and, eventually, our series will be the first one to offer the complete orchestral works of the composer on 10 CDs. Conductor and orchestra are familiar with the idiom of the composer whose works combine both influences of the Czech National School and of contemporary German composers such as Schumann, Weber and Wagner. Not to be missed! Volume 3 has already been recorded and will be released later this year.

MOERAN, E.J.: In the Mountain Country / Rhapsodies / Overture for a Masque (Frith, Ulster Orchestra, Falletta)
8.573106  Moeran: In the Mountain Country / Rhapsodies / Overture for a Masque

These works are marked by melodic exuberance, inventive scoring and formal mastery. This recording is part of our ongoing Moeran series with the Ulster Orchestra conducted by Naxos house artist, JoAnn Falletta. It is the only recording grouping the three rhapsodies together, including the F sharp-major work for piano and orchestra. This is highly enjoyable music, superbly performed and recorded. Something not only for collectors of British music!

CATALANI, A.: Ero e Leandro / Contemplazione / Il Mattino (Rome Symphony, La Vecchia)
8.573072  Catalani: Ero e Leandro / Contemplazione / Il Mattino

Here are more discoveries from our Roman house orchestra, orchestral works by one of Italy's most important opera composers of the second half of the 19th century. Best known today for his opera La Wally, made famous by the aria "Ebben! Ne Andro Lontana" which is included in almost every collection of great Italian soprano arias, Catalani also wrote a small number of orchestral works, five of which are included on this disc. They are written in a Romantic idiom and display the composer's melodic gifts.

BRUCKNER, A.: Symphonies (Complete) (Tintner) (12-CD Boxed Set)
8.501205  Bruckner: Complete Symphonies (12-CD Boxed Set)

This is a new box set offering our justly acclaimed recordings of the composer's complete symphonies which include not only the numbered symphonies but also the early No. 0 and No. 00. A bonus CD first a talk on Bruckner's symphonies given by the conductor in 1974.

This is without doubt one of the finest set of the complete symphonies and no other Naxos symphonic cycle has received as much critical acclaim.

Critical acclaim for Tintner's Bruckner cycle:
