Dear ClassicsOnline customer,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key January releases from Naxos. Here are his recommendations:

DVORAK, A.: Symphony No. 6 / JANACEK, L.: Idyll (Seattle Symphony, Schwarz)
8.572698  Dvorak: Symphony No. 6 / Janacek: Idyll

This is a very attractive addition to our Seattle Symphony releases. The Sixth is one of Dvořák's great symphonies and receives the full Seattle/Schwarz treatment – musical, dramatic, romantic. Janáček's Idyll reflects the composer's interest in Moravian folk songs and rhythms. The work is new to the Naxos catalogue. First-class sound. A most enjoyable listening experience!

WHITBOURN, J.: Annelies (chamber version) (A. Zukerman, Westminster Williamson Voices, Lincoln Trio, Chandra, J. Jordan)
8.573070  Whitbourn: Annelies

World Première Recording

This is the first recording of the chamber version of this modern oratorio of great and moving power, based on The Diary of Anne Frank. The music has universal appeal and has been described as "woundingly beautiful". A must for all admirers of James Whitbourn.

MOZART, W.A.: Divertimenti Nos. 11 and 17 (Cologne Chamber Orchestra, Muller-Bruhl)
8.570990  Mozart: Divertimenti Nos. 11 and 17

This is the last recording the late Helmut Müller-Brühl made for Naxos. Both works date from Mozart's Salzburg period and are full of melodic invention and charm. Beautifully played by the conductor's Cologne Chamber Orchestra and recorded in the excellent acoustics of the Deutschlandfunk concert studio. One of my favourite recordings of the year!

PAGANINI, N.: Violin Concerto No. 5 / I palpiti (Pochekin, Russian Philharmonic, Yablonsky)
8.570487  Paganini: Violin Concerto No. 5

This recording closes another important gap in our catalogue, one of the composer's last two concertos – No. 6 has already been recorded and will be released later this year. The performance by the prize-winning young Russian virtuoso Ivan Pochekin is stunning. This is one of the best versions of this concerto and of the two virtuoso fillers currently in the market.

CLEMENTI, M.: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 / Overture in D major (Rome Symphony Orchestra, La Vecchia)
8.573071  Clementi: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2

Most music lovers know Clementi as a composer of attractive piano sonatas. These are his only two symphonies. Both can stand comparison with the great Viennese symphonies of the classical period. They are reminiscent of Beethoven's early symphonies but also sometimes look forward to the early Romantic era. Our recording features the new editions by Pietro Spada. Excellent performances by our Rome Symphony Orchestra under Francesco La Vecchia.

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
