Dear ClassicsOnline customer,

Naxos Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts on a few key February releases from Naxos. Here are his recommendations:

MENDELSSOHN, Felix: Violin Concertos / Violin Sonata in F minor (Tianwa Yang, Descharmes, Sinfonia Finlandia Jyvaskyla, P. Gallois)
8.572662  Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos / Violin Sonata in F minor

This new recording couples the famous E-Minor Concerto with the much less well-known, youthful D-Minor Concerto and, as a filler, there is the F Minor Violin Sonata. Our star violinist Tianwa Yang plays all three works very musically and expressively, supported by our house conductor Patrick Gallois and his Sinfonia Finlandia. This is one of the best performances of the E-Minor Concerto now in the market and the two couplings should make this recording irresistible for violin lovers. First-class sound by our regular producer, Sean Lewis.

HASSE, J.A.: Didone abbandonata [Opera] (Holzhauser, Ferri-Benedetti, Barna-Sabadus, Hinterdobler, Celeng, Burkhart, Hofkapelle Munchen, Hofstetter)
8.660323-25  Hassé: Didone abbandonata

This is the first recording of this opera by one of the greatest Baroque composers, Johann Adolph Hasse. The cast features award-winning young soloists and the Munich Hofkapelle on original instruments. This is something for every lover of the high baroque and the beginnings of bel canto. Not to be missed!

ELLINGTON, D.: Black, Brown and Beige / Harlem / Three Black Kings / The River Suite (Buffalo Philharmonic, Falletta)
8.559737  Ellington: Black, Brown and Beige

Our recording offers some of Ellington's most famous big-band works in orchestrations for full symphony orchestra. This is the first ever recording coupling all these pieces on one CD. The Buffalo Philharmonic under JoAnn Falletta gives brilliant, idiomatic performances and this is now the recording of choice to have of these works. Terrific sound by Grammy®-award-winning producer, Tim Handley.

WEINBERG, M.: Symphony No. 8, Op. 83, 'Tveti Pol'shi' (Polish Flowers) (Dobrowolska, Marciniec, Bartminski, Wit)
8.572873  Weinberg: Symphony No. 8 'Polish Flowers'

This is the third volume of our project to record all the Weinberg symphonies together with Chandos. Our first two recordings came from St. Petersburg whereas the third recording features the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir under Antoni Wit. The symphony uses texts drawn from the epic poem Polish Flowers by Julian Tuwim, which reflects on Poland's troubled past and ominous future. There are a few orchestra/choir combinations better equipped to deliver first-rate performances of large choral works than Antoni Wit and his Warsaw forces and this will now be the recording of choice of this work. An absolute must for collectors of Russian 20th century symphonies.

ALBERT, E. d': Symphony in F major / Symphonic Prelude to Tiefland (Leipzig MDR Symphony, Markl)
8.572805  D'Albert: Symphony in F major

Here is the first volume of our project to record Eugen d'Albert's complete orchestral works, including all the overtures/preludes to the composer's operas, with the MDR Symphony and Jun Markl. This recording couples the composer's only symphony with the prologue to his best-known opera Tiefland. Excellent performances by one of our house orchestras and conductors, produced by Tim Handley.

MOZART, W.A.: Violin Sonatas Nos. 24, 25, 26 / Piano Sonata No. 17 (arr. for flute and piano) (P. Gallois, Prinz)
8.573033  Mozart: Violin Sonatas arranged for flute and piano

Our star flautist [and conductor] arranged four of Mozart's most popular violin sonatas for flute and piano and recorded them himself together with Romanian pianist, Maria Prinz. A very attractive novelty for collectors of flute repertoire.

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
