Klaus Heymann Recommends - ClassicsOnline

Dear ClassicsOnline Fans,

Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann offers his insights on a selection of April Naxos releases.

JANACEK, L.: Taras Bulba / Lachian Dances / Moravian Dances (Warsaw Philharmonic, Wit)
8.572695  Janacek: Taras Bulba / Lachian Dances / Moravian Dances

I have been a great Janacek fan all my life and am delighted that we now have all his most important works in first-class performances and sound on Naxos.  Taras Bulba is one of the great symphonic poems of the 20th century and should be in everybody's collection.  The two sets of dances are as tuneful as those of Dvorak and Brahms.  Don’t miss this release and also consider the orchestral suites from the composer's six most important operas, arranged and conducted by Peter Breiner.

WEINBERG, M.: Symphony No. 6 / Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes (Glinka Choral College Boys' Choir, St. Petersburg State Symphony, Lande)
8.572779  Weinberg: Symphony No. 6 / Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes

We agreed with Chandos to split the project of recording the complete symphonies of Weinberg between us and this is the first installment of the Naxos part of the project.  Naxos will record symphonies Nos. 2, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15, 17, 18, 19 and 22 and Chandos has recorded or will record the remaining 11.  All 11 symphonies will be recorded by the St. Peterburg State Symphony, conducted by Vladimir Lande except symphonies Nos. 8 and 9 which will be recorded by the Warsaw Philharmonic, conducted by Antoni Wit.  Symphony No. 6 is scored for very large orchestra and children’s choir and has a heart-rending slow movement.  The Moldavian Rhapsody is a medley of Moldavian folk tunes, culminating in a joyous and noisy dance.  Not to be missed!

MESSIAEN, O.: Visions de l'Amen / DEBUSSY, C.: En blanc et noir (van Raat, Austbo)
8.572472  Messiaen: Visions de l'Amen / Debussy: En blanc et noir

Visions de l’Amen is performed here by our contemporary piano music specialist, Ralph van Raat and Hakon Austbo who recorded Messiaen’s complete solo piano music for Naxos.  The work was written in 1943 to be performed by the composer himself and his pupil Yvonne Loriod.  It is a profound religious meditation with almost overwhelming emotional intensity. Debussy’s piece was composed during World War I and is the composer's response to its horrors.  Model performances from these two prize-winning pianists.

BANKS, T.: SIX Pieces for Orchestra (City of Prague Philharmonic, Englishby)
8.572986  Banks: Six Pieces for Orchestra

The founder member of Genesis has a big following for his solo work outside the group.  His classical compositions have been admired for their lyricism and melodic qualities. There’s crossover interest in this disc as there was in his previous album for Naxos, Seven.  There are two strong soloists, Charlie Siem, violin and Martin Robertson, alto-saxophone.  This recording has great potential.  Give it a listen!

We hope you will enjoy these selections and more from Naxos Records and ClassicsOnline.
