Music from the Vienna New Year's Concert 2010

Since 1939 the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has given a New Year's Concert on January 1st. This beloved concert is marked by festive, upbeat selections such as waltzes and polkas, often by Austrian composers. Three encores are given, a fast polka followed by Johann Strauss II's Blue Danube Waltz which is traditionally interrupted by applause. The final encore is Johann Strauss I's Radetzky March. The program for 2010 contained the selections in the featured digital exclusive, performed by various orchestras recorded on the Naxos and Marco Polo labels. As this year's program also featured a composition by Hans Christian Lumbye, we include the new digital exclusive Best of LumbyeFor a limited time, please take both albums for $9.98 or $4.99 each.

Essential Masses on Naxos

Masses are sacred musical compositions; choral works that mirror the structure of the Eucharistic liturgy of several denominations of Christian churches, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Churches of the Anglican Communion, and the Lutheran Church.

To be considered a Mass, the work should contain six sections which constitute the Ordinary of the Mass; Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnes Dei. Masses are typically sung in Latin, the traditional language of the Roman Catholic church, but later compositions may use different languages and vary the structure. Masses can be a capella or with instrumental accompaniment ranging from small ensembles up to full orchestras. Many Masses, especially later ones, are intended for the concert hall and not to be performed during an actual Mass.

Naxos presents two special packages, one featuring Masses from the Early Music, Renaissance and Baroque periods, and one featuring Masses from the Classical, Romantic and 20th Century periods. Purchase all the releases in either package and get a discount, 25% for package one, 15% for package two. (read more

Small Brass Ensembles - Baroque and Beyond

Brass music in the baroque era would have been played on 'natural' instruments, meaning that no valves were used to change the pitch.  Instead, trumpets and French horns changed the pitch by bending the notes, an imprecise and difficult method.  Still, composers such as Monteverdi and Gabrielli composed for brass choirs, often two or three such groupings arranged antiphonally at various places around the performance area.

Brass instruments were transformed after the invention of the rotary and piston valves around 1815.  Valves enabled the player to change the length of the tubing, allowing for a full chromatic scale.  Thus the modern instruments could be more easily played in tune with woodwinds, and Berlioz, Wagner and others began to score for ever larger brass sections.  Pure brass ensembles followed, and the typical brass quintet of two trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba became popular in the 20th century.  The interplay of voices in Baroque music suits the brass quintet well, and we hope you enjoy these selections of Brass from the Baroque and beyond.
