Ives, C.: Concord Symphony (arr. H. Brant) / Copland, A.: Symphony for Organ and Orchestra (Jacobs, San Francisco Symphony, M.T. Thomas)

Charles Ives' Concord Symphony is the product of two minds - Ives composed the Concord Sonata for piano, thoroughly modern and full of color, and Henry Brant created the fully orchestrated version with its themes of transcendentalism intact. Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony unleash every emotion in the score from tender reflection to thunderous rage and cacaphony. The recording is superb and highly recommended for demonstrating your sound system.

Beethoven, L. van: Mass in C Major, Op. 86 (London Symphony, C. Davis)

Beethoven's Mass in C major is less often performed than his other choral works, but that doesn't seem to trouble Colin Davis, the London Symphony Orchestra, Chorus and soloists who give their all in this tremendous live recording. This piece contains some of Beethoven's most sublime writing for voices, and deserves the highly polished, impassioned performance it gets here.
Naxos: 8.572336
Chopin, F.: Piano Concerto No. 2 / Variations on La ci darem / Andante spianato and Grande polonaise brillante (Nebolsin, Warsaw Philharmonic, Wit)

Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 was actually written just prior to his only other Piano Concerto, but published afterward, leading to the number switch. It is very piano-centric, using the orchestra to frame and add color to the dramatic piano playing he would use to launch his international career. This modern recording also features Chopin's Andante spianato and Grande polonaise brillante. Performances given by Eldar Nebolsin, and the Warsaw Philharmonic are top-notch.
