Balsom, Alison: Sound the Trumpet - Royal Music of Purcell and Handel
Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf / Britten: Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (Children's Classics)
Brahms: Hungarian Dances Nos. 1-21
Warner Classics - Parlophone: 5099944032852
Balsom, Alison: Sound the Trumpet - Royal Music of Purcell and Handel

These performances of works by Handel and Purcell make for delightful listening. Alison Balsom performs on natural trumpet - one without valves, but with small vents that aid in changing pitch. She is in complete control from the bottom to the top of the range, and intonation is as near perfection as one could wish for, and Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert provide lively support. As MusicWeb puts it, "Only the most unbending of purist zealots would fail to love this record."
Naxos: 8.554170
Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf / Britten: Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (Children's Classics)

Treat the young persons in your home this weekend to three popular compositions designed to educate and entertain. Dame Edna Everage gives Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf a good-humored, energetic performance; Poulenc's L'Histoire de Babar offers a musical interpretation of the tales of the beloved gray elephant; and Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra rounds out this "splendidly alive and colourful" (Penguin Guide) performance from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Hungaroton: HCD12571
Brahms: Hungarian Dances Nos. 1-21

There may be no better ensemble to perform these orchestrations of Brahms Hungarian Dances than the Budapest Festival Orchestra under the direction of Ivan Fischer. Brahms himself orchestrated a few of his popular pieces, Dvorak a few more and the rest exist in a variety of versions from various arrangers. Beautifully recorded, these renditions strike just the right balance - capturing the Hungarian flavour to perfection without ever becoming overwraught. Highly recommended.
