Mozart, W.A.: Don Giovanni [Opera] (Jacobs)

ClassicsToday says of Rene Jacobs' Don Giovanni, "It is enthralling from start to finish, played with more color than any other version I know of, led with an occasional eccentricity of tempo that justifies itself almost invariably in context, sung beautifully and expressively, and using the continuo–pianoforte and cello–more creatively, more interactively, than I’ve ever encountered."

Bergeron, S.: Perceval la quete du Graal (The Quest for the Grail, Vol. 1) (La Nef)

La Nef takes early music as a starting point in crafting a dramatic and moving experience that manages to be both ancient and entirely new. Here we are treated to one of the earliest texts of the quest for the Holy Grail. La Nef use period-correct music as well as their own compositions to tell the story of Perceval, his early life in the forest, and joining King Arthur's knights. Volume 1 of 2.

Bergeron, S.: Perceval la quete du Graal (The Quest for the Grail, Vol. 2) (La Nef)

In volume 2 of La Nef's story of Perceval and King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, we follow our hero to the castle of the Grail, where he meets the Fisher King, the Young Maid, the Hideous Damsel, and the Hermit. A highlight is the Fisher King's song of greeting, adapted from a Gaelic melody. Splendid performances and sound complete a thoroughly enjoyable program.
