Mahler, G.: Symphony No. 1, "Titan" (Bamberg Symphony, Nott)

Scored for a 100 piece orchestra, Mahler's Symphony No. 1 'Titan' gets a superb performance from Jonathan Nott and the Bamberg Symphony. Though it may seem familiar to modern listeners, this work was truly revolutionary at the time of its debut in 1896, especially in the slow movement, which detours into 'town band' and 'klezmer' sections. Many interpreters play up such dramatic departures, but here, Nott and band integrate the lively flourishes into a seamless whole.

Bartok, B.: Concerto for Orchestra / Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta (Baltimore Symphony, Alsop)

Béla Bartóks Concerto for Orchestra, one of his greatest works, was written in the United States after the composer was forced to flee Hungary during World War II. It is not only a brilliant display vehicle for each instrumental section but a work of considerable structural ingenuity.
Oehms Classics: OC958
Mayr, J.S.: Demetrio [Opera] (Agudin)

With Demetrio, Giovanni Simone Mayr left to posterity a masterpiece that belongs on the great stages of the world. Mayr's late work is a mixture of romantic anticipation, stylistic reminiscences of Mozart and Haydn, bel canto elements and a touch of Rossini, all with Mayr's unique melodic inventiveness.
