Stamitz, J.: Flute Concertos (Aitken, St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, Katkus) Rachmaninov, S.: Symphonic Dances / Vocalise / Respighi, O.: 5 Etudes-tableaux (Oue)

Davidoff, C.: Cello Concertos Nos. 3 and 4 (Wen-Sinn Yang, Shanghai Symphony, Mikkelsen)

Karl Yulievich Davidov was called 'the tsar of the cello' by his countryman P.I. Tchaikovsky. Mostly known for virtuoso cello performances, he also composed, mainly for that instrument. Here, a performance of his cello concerto, with Wen-Sinn Yang at cello, and the Shanghai Symphony.
Naxos: 8.570150
Stamitz, J.: Flute Concertos (Aitken, St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, Katkus)

Mozart's contemporary Johann Stamitz was a pioneer in the development of the symphony, but he also composed many delightful concertos, including 14 for flute. Virtuosity, lyricism, a touch of Bohemianism and the antecedents of the Classical period can be heard.
Reference Recordings: RR-96CD
Rachmaninov, S.: Symphonic Dances / Vocalise / Respighi, O.: 5 Etudes-tableaux (Oue)

This is one of those recordings where composition, performance and audiophile quality align and produce something greater than the sum of its parts. The Minnesota Orchestra is in top form both in ensemble and solo performance. Go ahead and turn up the volume on this one.
