Suk, J.: Asrael (Helsinki Philharmonic, Ashkenazy)
Gade, N.W.: Violin Sonatas Nos. 1-3 (Astrand, Salo)
Bruckner, A.: Symphony No. 3 (1889 version) (Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, Bolton)
Ondine: ODE1132-5
Suk, J.: Asrael (Helsinki Philharmonic, Ashkenazy)

Asrael was composed in reaction to a tragic year in the life of Josef Suk in which he lost both his friend and mentor, Anton Dvorak, and his wife (and Dvorak's daughter) Otilie. Ashkenazy and the Helsinki Philharmonic deliver a gripping, emotional performance, and the sound is first-rate.
Dacapo: 8.226066
Gade, N.W.: Violin Sonatas Nos. 1-3 (Astrand, Salo)

Niels Gade was the foremost Danish musician and composer of the 19th Century, and teacher of both Grieg and Nielsen. A talented violinist, his sonatas for that instrument are substantial examples in the German romantic tradition. Spanning Gade's career, they present the full gamut of emotions - Opus 6 in A is bright and optimistic; Opus 21 in D minor dark and brooding; and Opus 59 is a later, insightful, hopeful piece.
Oehms Classics: OC722
Bruckner, A.: Symphony No. 3 (1889 version) (Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, Bolton)

In this 1889 version of his Third Symphony, Bruckner removed the direct Wagner quotes, allowing his own distinctive voice to clearly emerge. Less often recorded, this version is tighter, shorter and has an arguably clearer vision. Ivor Bolton conducts the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra in a surefooted performance.
