Dvorak, A.: String Quartet Nos. 11 and 12, "American" (Wihan String Quartet)

Of the 14 string quartets written by Antonin Dvorak, only No. 12 'American' is regularly performed and familiar to most listeners. Here, it is paired with the equally brilliant, but overlooked, No. 11 in C major, and given a precise, focused and driven performance by the Wihan Quartet.
Naxos: 8.555776
Holst: The Planets / The Mystic Trumpeter, Op. 18

From its premiere to the present day, Gustav Holst's The Planets has been enduringly popular, influential, widely performed and frequently recorded. The pieces themselves make reference to astrological, rather than astronomic qualities of the planets, which account for the absence of an Earth element.
