Wagner, R.: Overtures / Preludes (Royal Scottish National Orchestra, N. Jarvi)
Hasse, J.A.: Mass in D Minor / Miserere in C Minor (Max)
Respighi, O.: Ancient Airs and Dances, Suites Nos. 1-3 (Ireland National Symphony, Saccani)
Chandos: CHSA5126
Wagner, R.: Overtures / Preludes (Royal Scottish National Orchestra, N. Jarvi)

The instrumental music of Wagner gets a gorgeous recording and a rousing performance from Neeme Jarvi and the Royal Scottish National Orchstra. Welcome rarities include Die Feen and Das Liebersvoort which appear alongside better-known overtures from Wagner operas. An excellent introduction to Wagner for new initiates, and sounds gorgeous in FLAC.
Capriccio: C5125
Hasse, J.A.: Mass in D Minor / Miserere in C Minor (Max)

The music of Johann Adolph Hasse is well worth getting to know, and these two pieces serve quite well as introductions for those who haven't had the opportunity. Hasse and his diva wife Faustina Bordoni were superstars in the mid 1700's, travelling and performing all over Europe. Hasse's music has gotten attention in the last few decades, saving it from undeserved obscurity.
Naxos 19th/20th Century Italian Classics: 8.553546
Respighi, O.: Ancient Airs and Dances, Suites Nos. 1-3 (Ireland National Symphony, Saccani)

Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances are the composer's look back at songs and dances one hundred years before his birth, and bringing his own form of orchestral colors to formal music of the pre-classical era. The result is immediately attractive music with all of the composers gift of exotic orchestration.
