Britten: The Turn of the Screw

Exceptional vocal performances from Philip Langridge and Felicity Lott, and Britten's gorgeous orchestration are the highlights of this recording of Turn of the Screw. Britten's opera interprets the Henry James novel as a ghost story and the combination of dissonance and tonality provide just the right sense of foreboding. A 20th Century opera classic.
Onyx: ONYX4060
Mendelssohn, Felix: Violin Concerto in E Minor / String Octet (Ehnes, Philharmonia Orchestra, Ashkenazy, Seattle Chamber Music Society)

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor was his last large scale composition and has become a staple in the violin repertoire. The program continues with Mendelssohn's beloved String Octet in E minor. The superb James Ehnes performs with Ashkenazy conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra.
West Hill Radio Archives: WHRA-6048
Bernstein, Leonard: Historic Broadcasts (1941-1961)

This is a fascinating peek behind the scenes of the great Leonard Bernstein at work bringing great works to life between 1941 and 1960. Most of these historical live recordings are previously unissued, rare gems from a broad chunk of the brilliant young conductor's career.
