Vaughan Williams: A London Symphony / Butterworth: The Banks of Green Willow

A London Symphony was Vaughan Williams' favorite of his own symphonies, and subject to a number of revisions with the definitive version not published until 1936. This 1913 original version is given a sensitive interpretation by Sir Richard Hickox, and gorgeous sound over tremendous dynamic range courtesty of Chandos.
BIS: BIS-CD-1478-80
Alfven: The Symphonies and Rhapsodies

Thanks be to BIS for bringing the music of Hugo Alfven to the attention of classical music fans. This 5 disc (for the price of 3) anthology brings to life this nationalist Swedish composer so capable of rendering the magic and unique character of his home country. Neeme Jarvi conducts with enthusiasm and authority.
Zig-Zag Territoires: ZZT040102
Mendelssohn, Felix: Cello Sonatas Nos. 1 and 2 (Leroy, Moubarak)

Mendelssohn was reputed to have a special fondness for the cello, and these sonatas are considered by many to be among the finest in the repertoire for that instrument. Here they are given a spirited, engaging performance by Anthony Leroy.
