On this disc, Chandos brings together some of the highlights from Neeme Järvi's five-volume Wagner series with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Preludes and Overtures to all the big works are here, as well as the seldom performed and recorded overture Wagner wrote for the play Columbus by Theodor Apel. As an added bonus, the Overture to Der fliegende Holländer, a piece not before released as part of the Wagner series is included.

Richard Danielpour's Lacrimae Beati owes its origin to Mozart's Requiem and was conceived after a perilous flight in 2002. Darkness in the Ancient Valley, uses a wide range of Persian folk-melodies, and A Woman's Life is a cycle of poems by Maya Angelou charting the trajectory from childhood to old age.

The Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marek Janowski performs Hans Werner Henze's Symphonies No. 1 and 6 on this new release from the German Wergo label. Henze considered the original version of his First Symphony a 'pure failure' and completely reworked it in 1963, making further revisions in 1991 and 2005. The Sixth Symphony was a departure of sorts, written in Cuba and incorporating Cuban 'Son' dance rhythms.
