Elgar, E.: Dream of Gerontius (The) / Symphony No. 1 (Auty, Breedt, J. Hancock, Collegium Vocale Gent, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, de Waart)
PentaTone: PTC5186472

The Dream of Gerontius is Edward Elgar's best known choral work, and is considered by many to be his masterpiece. Composed in 1900, and based on a text by John Henry Newman, the piece relates the story of a pious man at the end of life. His soul embarks on a journey from his deathbed, including conversations with Angels and Demons, eventually leading to an encounter with The Almighty, judgement and purgatory. This audiophile recording on the PentaTone label brings together the Royal Flemish Philharmonic as well as Collegium Vocale Gent and soloists.
