Hindemith, P.: Piano Concertos (Complete) (Biret, Yale Symphony, Toshiyuki Shimada)
Naxos: 8.573201-02

Paul Hindemith wrote a substantial amount of music for piano with orchestral accompaniment. Originally conceived as an experimental ballet, his Theme with Four Variations (The Four Temperaments) was first performed in 1946 with choreography by George Balanchine. Piano Music with Orchestra was found amongst pianist Paul Wittgenstein's papers after his wife's death in 2001. The Concerto for Piano and Orchestra is astutely conceived, while the Concert Music for Piano, Brass and Two Harps offers a fascinating combination of instruments.
