The two pieces on this new, digital-only release from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's in-house label were recorded live at their 2012 premieres. "Muti and the CSO members...threw themselves into the music with considerable mega-wattage of their own." — Chicago Tribune

Naxos: 8.660354

Peter Maxwell Davies's haunting and thrilling chamber opera The Lighthouse is heard here in its première recording. It tells the story of the Flannan Isles lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides, discovered empty, the three keepers apparently having disappeared into thin air. It imagines what might have become of the three men, marooned in their storm-bound tower and overwhelmed by ghostly visions and crazed desperation, creating a dramatic story which remains a mystery to this day.

Schubert, F.: Lazarus [Oratorio] (Wegener, Winkel, Harmsen, A. Weller, Lichdi, Berndt, Stuttgart Chamber Choir, Hofkapelle Stuttgart, Bernius) Schubert, F.: Lazarus [Oratorio] (Wegener, Winkel, Harmsen, A. Weller, Lichdi, Berndt, Stuttgart Chamber Choir, Hofkapelle Stuttgart, Bernius)
Carus: Carus83.293

After the prize-winning first recording of Franz Schubert's opera Sakontala, Frieder Bernius has now turned to his oratorio Lazarus. Although it only survives as a fragment, Lazarus is often regarded as a forerunner of Wagner's Parsifal because of its recitative-arioso form, and still retains its place in the repertoire. For the live recording from the Bachfest Leipzig 2013, Bernius was joined by a distinguished line-up of soloists, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Hofkapelle Stuttgart.

Yoonie Han has won the top prizes at the International Bachauer Piano Competition, Washington International Piano Competition, the Fulbright Concerto Competition, the World Piano Competition, and the Kosciuszko Chopin Competition.
