Sheng, Bright: Blazing Mirage (The) / The Song and Dance of Tears / Colors of Crimson (Hong Kong Philharmonic, Bright Sheng)
Naxos / 21st Century Chinese Classics: 8.570610

These recent compositions by Bright Sheng once again demonstrate his unique ability to create orchestral effects that incorporate elements of classical and folk music from China and Central Asia. The Blazing Mirage for cello and strings features soloist Trey Lee, who both commissioned the work and gave the première in October 2012. In November 2001, Sheng received a MacArthur Fellowship and he is the New York City Ballet's first composer-in-residence.

This all-Wagner recital program from soprano Anne Schwanewilms features famous arias from "Tannhäuser" and "Tristan und Isolde", as well as the lovely, rapturous Wesendonck Lieder. Ms. Schwanewilms, having sucessfully debuted recently at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, makes her debut as Isolde on this recording, supported by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Cornelius Meister.

Raff, J.: Symphony No. 5, "Lenore" / Overtures / Abends (Swiss Romande Orchestra, N. Järvi)
Chandos: CHSA5135

This is the second volume in Neeme Järvi's series with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande devoted to Joachim Raff's orchestral music. Raff's Symphony No. 5 Lenore is heard alongside the rhapsody Abends and overtures and preludes to Dame Kobold, König Alfred, Die Eifersüchtigen and Dornröschen. The performances in Volume 1 were described as 'peerless' by BBC Music, suggesting that these are the ideal performers to reinvigorate interest in Raff's music.

Litton, Andrew: Tribute to Oscar Peterson (A) Litton, Andrew: Tribute to Oscar Peterson (A)
BIS: BIS-2034

On his 16th birthday, Andrew Litton received a solo album of Oscar Peterson playing his own jazz improvisations. Thus began a lifetime obsession that resulted in his collecting all of Peterson's recordings, and then collecting Peterson's transcriptions of the improvisations and learning them himself. Now, in tribute to his hero, Mr. Litton has recorded his own performances of some of these transcriptions, including Monk's 'Round Midnight, Billy Strayhorn's Take the 'A' Train and Thad Jones' A Child Is Born.
