Meyerbeer, G,: Africaine (L'), "Vasco de Gama" [Opera] (Berchtold, Chemnitz State Opera Chorus, Robert Schumann Philharmonie, Beermann)
CPO: 777828-2

Meyerbeer's Vasco de Gama was completed four months prior to his death after decades of revision and rejection. This opera is known to posterity as L'Africaine (The African Woman) based on Eugène Scribe's original libretto, which told the story of an African princess unhappily in love with a Portuguese naval officer. Eventually, the Portuguese seafarer became the historical explorer Vasco da Gama, requiring a change of setting from Africa to India, and the change in title.
