Sibelius, J.: Lemminkäinen Suite / The Wood Nymph (Lahti Symphony, Vänskä)
BIS: BIS-1745

Jean Sibelius is best known for his seven symphonies and violin concerto, but his extensive and wide-ranging output also contains an impressive series of orchestral tone-poems. The works on this disc were composed in the 1890s at a time when Finland, then an autonomous grand duchy of the Russian empire, was finding its liberties severely curtailed.

Delos: DE3450

Of American soprano Nicole Cabell's ravishing singing The Times of London, writes, "It's a voice that wraps itself around you...long, sinuous phrasing, warm tone and sophistication..." Ms. Cabell established herself by winning the 2005 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World award, and now, in her Delos debut, she explores the world of the French chanson, and its direct descendant, the mélodie.

During a performance in Berlin in 1913, Richard Strauss saw, and was inspired by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. His response was to compose Joseph's Legende for the extraordinary ensemble. This ballet tells the biblical story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife, a rich and powerful woman who becomes infatuated with the innocent shepherd.

Cage, J.: Works for 2 Keyboards, Vol. 3 (Pestova, Meyer) Cage, J.: Works for 2 Keyboards, Vol. 3 (Pestova, Meyer)
Naxos / American Classics: 8.559728

Iconoclast John Cage has developed the technique of 'indeterminacy', exemplified by Winter Music, which remains coloristic and resonant despite no specific time signature or tempo being assigned. Two2 is a composition that considers the structure of listening itself and one that continues to influence a new generation of composers. This is the final disc in the series of three.
